Training the next generation, with apprenticeships at Conscia

Developed in collaboration with local institutions like Abingdon & Witney College, the programme offers tailored apprenticeships that empower individuals to specialise and thrive. The success of apprentices like Zak, who now mentors others, highlights the long-term impact of this approach. By equipping new professionals with real-world skills and support, Conscia builds a stronger future for both the individuals and the industry.

Whether supporting clients through training or exchanging insights among colleagues, Conscia upholds the principle that knowledge should be openly shared. Ensuring all stakeholders are well-informed ultimately serves the best interests of all involved.

An example of this in practice is the Early Career Programme – an initiative that emphasises Conscia’s commitment to developing new talent, rather than relying on hiring established experts. With opportunities ranging from work experience weeks and short-term internships to full apprenticeships that span multiple years, the programme is designed to support individuals that are just starting out in the industry by providing hands-on experience and mentorship.

The apprenticeships that Conscia offers have been developed in collaboration with Abingdon & Witney College and others to allow students to develop skills alongside their regular studies. It provides an opportunity for participants to start earning while applying their newly learned skills in real work situations, as well as achieving recognised industry certifications. With an Conscia office nearby, these apprenticeships presented a golden opportunity to provide local students with valuable skills and knowledge, and to help prepare the next generation of industry professionals.

Rather than taking a generalised approach, Conscia apprenticeships focus on specific areas of the business – chosen by the participant – that ensure targeted development and meaningful contribution. By choosing a specialised field for their focus, apprentices are able to develop specific knowledge and practical skills that are directly transferrable into the industry, while benefitting from the expertise and mentorship of a globally recognised digital consultancy.

Combining training with real-world experience

To demonstrate the benefits and results of this approach, we can look at the journey of Conscia’s first ever apprentice, Zak, who is now coming to the end of his apprenticeship after almost three years at Conscia. After beginning his placement without much pre-existing knowledge in the field, Zak’s commitment and hard work during his time at Conscia has led to his achieving a number of industry-recognised certifications – including CCST (Cisco-Certified Support Technician), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate), and CNMA (Cisco Meraki Networking Associate).

Zak’s training has also led to him spending more time on-site, alongside experienced Conscia engineers in real-world situations. Over time, he has progressed from shadowing these engineers, to performing work under supervision, to now being fully capable of travelling to sites and performing work on his own.

In addition to working as an engineer, Zak now helps to support and train Adam and Calan – two more apprentices, who both joined the company after Zak through the same scheme. As both a role model and a mentor, Zak provides the newer apprentices with a concrete example of what the outcome of an Conscia apprenticeship can look like.

Though all three apprentices are taking part in the same programme, the structure of the scheme provides enough individual flexibility that they have each chosen different paths, at different corresponding apprenticeship levels. While Adam and Calan are both still in the early stages of their time at Conscia, their progress is already evident.

Though Adam is still deep in the midst of learning for the role of a support technician, he is already able to perform relevant work, picking up tickets and helping to solve real issues for our clients. Meanwhile Calan, who has decided on cyber security as a focus, has already achieved his CCST certification and is well on his way towards the CCNA. On top of his studies, he also travels to site with Conscia engineers to shadow their work and help out where he is able.

While apprentices like Adam and Calan manage a significant amount of independent study, they are fully supported by Zak and the wider Conscia engineering team. Daily check-in calls help monitor their progress and create a welcoming space for questions, while weekly in-person sessions at the office provide further guidance and connection.

Making an impact

All three apprentices have had a tangible, positive impact on the company, and have continuously demonstrated their value. While their futures ultimately rest with each participant, it’s our hope that their experiences at Conscia inspire them to continue their journeys with us in a full-time role. Over the course of their apprenticeships, they have all become valuable members of the team, and we would be proud to see them grow further within the organisation.
