Location services in healthcare – designing the network to support critical services

Wireless technology is now indispensable in healthcare, supporting connected medical devices, Electronic Patient Records, patient and guest internet access, and Govroam connectivity. Beyond basic wireless, location services offer transformative benefits: real-time tracking of patients, staff, and equipment improves workflow, reduces waiting times, and enhances patient care. Technologies like RTLS, RFID, and BLE each serve distinct tracking needs, with RTLS providing real-time accuracy, BLE offering power-efficient room-level tracking, and RFID excelling in item identification. Designing a location-capable wireless network requires thorough RF surveys and calibration to ensure precision and reliability. Partnering with experts is essential for successful implementation and maximising value.

Investing in sustainable infrastructure for the future of digital transformation

Digital transformation in education is no longer novel—it’s essential. But as institutions move forward, the challenge lies in making this transformation sustainable. In his UCISA blog series, Simon Furber explores how to balance innovation with long-term viability. He argues that true sustainability begins with future-proof infrastructure—one that supports operational efficiency, flexibility, and green goals. Investment in scalable, efficient architecture not only enhances teaching, learning, and cybersecurity but also helps institutions remain resilient amid financial and environmental uncertainty. With the right strategy and partnerships, universities can build digital foundations that benefit everyone, long into the future.

Cisco’s upcoming acquisition of Isovalent emphasises an industry push towards deep observability

Cisco’s planned acquisition of security startup Isovalent, known for key open-source projects like Cilium and eBPF, signals a major push into cloud-native security and observability. Alongside Cisco’s earlier Splunk deal, this move highlights a strategic focus on enhancing visibility across complex networks and cloud environments. Improved observability helps organisations proactively detect and address issues, meeting rising demands from security frameworks like Cyber Essentials and DSPT. At ITGL, we’ve seen how tools like ThousandEyes and Cisco SecureX transform operational insight and security posture. A balancing act: maximising existing investments and assessing new opportunities in education

Digital transformation promises innovation and efficiency, but it’s often mistaken for simply replacing old systems with new ones. For academic institutions, success lies in balancing optimising existing technology with carefully planned new solutions. Understanding an organisation’s current IT estate—including limitations and dependencies—is critical but challenging, especially amid stretched resources. Partnering with experts can provide the necessary insight and support. By maximising current investments, like leveraging unused licenses or capabilities, institutions can unlock value without disruptive changes. When upgrades are needed, careful collaboration ensures smooth integration. ITGL specialises in guiding education providers through this journey—contact [email protected] to learn more.
