Opportunities and Threats with Quantum Computing

n this presentation we will address the current state of the art both in terms of quantum computing hardware and quantum computing software. We stand at the doorstep to the quantum industrial revolution, where there will be both opportunities and threats coming our way. Opportunities of using special designed quantum software on combinations of quantum hardware and classical computing. We will go through a number of industrial applications, which will in particular cover our latest quantum algorithm which in certain cases offers exponential speed up when computing quantities of interest in the financial sector, the defense sector and the Pharma sector to mention a few. Finally, we will also discuss the fast approaching threats posed by using quantum computers to break our existing encryption schemes, such as RSA encryption.

Building the Quantum Internet

Cisco’s quantum initiatives focus on building a practical quantum-networking stack that helps customers experiment with quantum solutions without needing access to massive, monolithic quantum computers. Through its prototype entanglement chip and integrated photonics approach, Cisco enables room-temperature quantum connectivity over existing fiber, allowing organizations to begin exploring distributed quantum workflows using infrastructure similar to what they already operate. The company’s software tools — the network-aware, distributed Quantum Compiler — give customers hands-on ways to learn how quantum algorithms can run across multiple heterogeneous systems. This empowers early adopters to test use cases such as secure communications, coordinated decision-making, and hybrid quantum-classical applications long before large-scale fault-tolerant machines become commonplace. Ultimately, Cisco’s work lowers the barrier to entry for organizations beginning their quantum journey, offering a path to practical experimentation today and a clear roadmap toward the future quantum internet.

Quantum Key Distribution og Post Quantum Cryptography

Classical encryption is primarily done through RSA encryption. The security of RSA encryption is due to a lack of computing power. This is challenged by modern quantum computers, which have strong enough computing power to break RSA encryption. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) are two alternatives to RSA encryption, both of which are resistant to quantum computers. PQC can be installed and run on existing classical computers, and offer at least a substantial delay of the need for the true quantum solution QKD. Unlike RSA encryption, the security of QKD is based on the laws of physics, and is therefore of a stronger principled nature. QKD has already been commercialized. In this talk we will explain these concepts and the state of the art. Further, we will discuss how we in Denmark are in the process of – through the project QCI.DK – deploying a quantum communication network based on QKD. Strategically selected nodes in the Copenhagen area are connected, and these are connected by a 200 km long quantum link to SDU. In the longer term, there is a vision of a Danish and a European quantum internet.

A practical approach to quantum-safe security

We all know the threat of quantum computers to public/private key cryptography. What organizations are struggling to reconcile is how to plan and implement this where the threat seems too far away and the journey appears to be challenging. This talk will cover how leading organizations are approaching the problem.
